MAMI WATA - GHANA
Origin: GHANA
Materials: Wood
Description:

This Ghanaian sculpture symbolises “Mami Awata” The water spririt,  celebrated throughout much of Africa. Mami Awata spirits are usually female but can sometimes manifest as a man. She is often described as a mermaid-like figure, with a woman's upper body  and the hindquarters of a fish or serpent. For some she bestows good fortune and status, for others, she aids in concerns related to procreation—infertility, impotence, or infant mortality. Many traditional groups in Africa till today do not go to the beach or fish on certain days in order to provide peace to the water deity’s home.
