Many pre-colonial African currencies were modeled after objects of inherent practical value. These forged iron shapes were exchanged for goods by the tribes in the districts where iron was plentiful. These pieces most likely come from a subset of F-shaped throwing knives with heads in the shapes of birds but they were mainly used as trading objects or currency.
