These ladders are used by the Dogon people, located in central Mali, to climb to upper rooftops of Granaries and houses. The flat roofs of typical Dogon homes served as storage and sleeping areas. Smaller versions of these utilitarian ladders were used to mark the entrance to shrines and sacred spaces. The majority of the Dogon live in the rocky hills, mountains, and plateaus of the Bandiagara Escarpment.
