This double-sided and reversible silk throw is hand-embroidered using the traditional Kantha stitch practiced by women in rural West Bengal. Several women simultaneously work on a textile piece, making every piece a product of meaningful time spent together. Stories and community wisdom are shared in this space of gathering and collective making. Kantha is defined by a simple but highly expressive running stitch that is used to create textiles with narratives or beautiful, abstract designs. This handmade textile has been created in collaboration with a fair trade organisation in West Bengal, working to empower rural women in the region through the strength of their craft.
