These hefty sculptural gongs were a symbol of wealth and power, usednot only  as instruments, but also as currency in important exchanges. The tribal elite would struck these gongs with a rubber coated stick in religious ceremonies and comunity festivals. In modern day interiors they are often used as sculptural objects of African metalwork art. Many pre-colonial African currencies were modeled after objects of inherent practical value.
