Handwoven and decorated with natural pigments, the mud cloth continues to be an important part of Bamana culture, used in ceremonies marking important life-cycle stages.  The slubby cotton textile is woven on narrow-width looms by men in the community. The plain cloth is painted on by women using pigments made of mud and indigenous leaves.
