This hand-cast candelabra has been made by master artisan Tiju Ram Vishwakarma who belongs to a community of forest dwellers or ‘Adivasis’ in the region of Bastar in north-central India. Bastar is an incredibly mineral-rich region, abundant in iron ore. Over centuries, the communities in Bastar developed a distinct tradition of metalwork that is entirely done by hand. The metal is heated in a clay oven and deftly hammered by hand to craft delicate, sculptural forms. The clean lines and earthy black iron ore used in Bastar metalwork give the craft a minimal, contemporary appeal.
