LARGE BASTAR METAL SCULPTURES
Origin: India
Materials: Iron
Description:

Bastar is one of the most mineral-rich regions in India, home to forest dwellers and 'Adivasi' groups who live close to the earth. This connection to the earth is reflected in their metal craft which seems to carry the ancient hum of the forest lands.

Though the region is abundant in iron ore, it is taken gently and carefully to make utility objects and works of art like these sculptures. The metal is heated using a small handmade clay furnace, and then dextrously hammered by hand.

Despite the exceptional craftsmanship, the past few years have been particularly challenging for metalwork artists like Tiju Ram, with the dwindling demand for their work in a fast-paced world which doesn't recognise the value of this precious, ancient craft. We hope to continue supporting artisans like Tiju Ram by platforming them at EVOKE London.
