The Djenné region in Mali has revealed numerous terracotta animals and reptiles. The reason for these zoomorphic sculptures is unclear, but it is thought they represented half-divine beings revered in particular sanctuaries. Tenenkou is located north of Djenne in the inner Niger Delta in Mali.
