GIRIYAMA POST - KENYA
Price: £ 1200
Origin: Kenya
Materials: Wood and Pigment
Description:

The Giriyama people came from Somalia and settled in the coastal region of Kenya in the 17th century. When Giriyama individuals obtain high status and authority within their society they are entitled to a Kikangu post. This post is an object of pride to the family responsible for erecting it. With the accession of other powerful ancestors it loses its power quickly. Even though it is reated to immortalise a deceased person, the Kikangu is not a realistic representation. When ceremonies and rituals have been respected, the posts are superfluous.
